Are you a Babe?

22 May

Of course you are!  But what I want to know is do you have a burning desire or a little flicker of hope to run your own business? I did, and Bizness Babes was the course that has helped me start the little spark of fire under my dreams.  Now I’m paying it forward just a little.  Here is a post written by the Brisbane facilitator of Bizness Babes, Samantha Jockel.  Bizness Babes have asked all their graduate bloggers to post this in their blog, and I’m so happy to be able to spread the news.

Business … do I really have what it takes?

Ever found yourself asking this question? For most people this is where it begins and also where it ends.  What sets an entrepreneur apart from the rest is not that they have ideas but they actually DO something about them.  That is it.  One tiny thing can take you from stay-at-home-mum to business entrepreneur, leading a ‘choose your own adventure’ life you only ever dreamed of.

My name is Samantha Jockel and for the last five years I have been a stay at home mum and business entrepreneur. It has been the most exciting, scary, fulfilling, frustrating and ultimately awesome time of my life.

I started contemplating the idea of business seven years ago when I was thinking about having children.  I knew I didn’t want to go back to work and leave my kids but I also knew I would need more stimulation than looking after a baby.  I have always been an ideas person with my fingers in many pies but just hadn’t made my own pies yet.

I decided I had to come up with an idea which could work with a baby in tow.  My background was social work and community development and my superpower was making things happen.  From a random thought in my head one day and a few encouraging conversations came my first business called Biddy Bags.

Biddy Bags merges the skills and abilities of crafting nanas with the design ideas of young fashionistas to create stylish, nana-made ethical products.  Refer to www.biddybags.com.au for more info.

From setting up and managing Biddy Bags I learnt that I LOVE business and have spent the past three years experimenting with lots of the different potential I see in the market.

I currently run a large facebook page, sell products and services at markets, co-founded two social enterprises and run a consultancy business.

What I have learnt about running a business is that it is not about having a great idea as much as it is about a willingness and love of learning.

As Richard Branson said: “Business opportunities are like buses, there’s always another one coming”.

I truly believe you can do whatever you want if you can be bothered the secret of business success is that it’s not necessarily about talent or a great idea but a desire to learn and grow and an ability to work hard.

What excites me the most is not what I have done but what I am yet to do.  As a stay at home mum you are in the perfect position to experiment with small business and see if you have the ability to learn, create and work hard in business. You too can choose YOUR own adventure, live YOUR dreams and be in control of YOUR own life.

Three years ago I was lucky to be offered a job working with a social enterprise called Bizness Babes.  Bizness Babes supports and empowers stay at home mums attempting to give business a go.  We run free training programs in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane and have had over 400 women come through our program since 2006.

Some graduate Bizness Babes businesses include Sunny Mummy, Peppermint Magazine, Home Life Simplified, Seven Cherubs, Gregarious Peach, Greensacks, Maternal Instincts, Kiss it Better Bags, Seven Canaries, and the Karma Soap Company

The great thing is that YOU could add your name to that list.   We are currently taking applications for our next round of courses.  In order to be eligible you need to meet a couple of criteria outlined in the application form.  Our Small Business Development Course is free to women who are unemployed, underemployed or marginalised in some way (see the FAQ on our website).

You can find out more about Bizness Babes and apply for our courses online at www.biznessbabes.com.au

Like our facebook page www.facebook.com/biznessbabes for regular updates, networking and inspiration.

And remember you are always in the position to CHOOSE your own adventure!!!!

And thank you Bizness Babes for not only making my business planning easy, but also making today’s blog post so easy!

What a bunch of Babes

6 Jul

Yesterday I graduated.  It wasn’t from University or even TAFE.  I don’t feel like I’ve had to slog and work hard to earn this certificate, though, mind you I have probably worked harder for this certificate in a short amount of time than any other I have earnt.  Yesterday I became a fully fledged Bizness Babe.  I have a certificate to prove it!

My Bizness Babes Certificate

I know I have blogged about Bizness Babes.  I have told everyone I can about how wonderful the program was for me.  I’ve recommended it to so many people.  I feel a bit like Katy Perry on the Proactiv ad.  I know the secret – here it is, give it a go!

Bizness Babes is a business development program developed and delivered specifically for mums.  In their own words

We began in 2006 with a vision to ignite the entrepreneurial spirit of mothers. Women who don’t have access to mainstream business education. Women who dream to succeed.

In March this year a group of 15 very lucky Mums, who I know I’m very lucky to now call friends, started our very steep learning curve and personal leap of faith.  We dived into the deep end of small business development and with the help of Chrissy, Vickie and Emma, plus a cast of very talented and inspirational guest appearances we’re all slowly surfacing to take our first big deep business breaths.

While I said I don’t feel like have worked hard to receive this certificate, I know that I have.  It has’t felt like work it has been fun, and I mean FUN!  I have finally found a niche for myself and a direction to head.  I have built so much self esteem and confidence it is ridiculous.  I have always thought that I could achieve anything I tried, but now I know it.  The best part is I’m not afraid to overcome the failures I’m sure I’m going to hit while I’m trying to get there.

So, to my fellow Bizness Babes, here’s to us, our families, our businesses and to our certain success!  To the rest of you, please check out the Bizness Babes website, support some BB businesses, support the program, and if you have a little seed of a business idea put in an application – it might just change your life!

In the meantime please check out these baby businesses, these are my fellow Bizness Babes graduates and their businesses that have benefited from the Bizness Babes training.

So, now I’m off to find somewhere to hang my brand new certificate!

Are you in the mood?

30 Jun

The mood for what I hear you ask.  The mood to inspire?  The mood to create? The mood to cut and paste like a pre-schooler???

It’s time to talk mood boards.

Mood boards can be an exceptionally fun way of identifying the look and feel you want for your landscape design, or any other project for that matter. A mood board is a collection of images and ideas that can provide inspiration and direction to determine the aesthetic you want to portray .  They provide not only a visual representation of your ideas, but also an emotional one.

You can use absolutely anything to represent how you want your garden to look and feel.  From the literal – photos of native plants or standard iceberg roses.  To the more metaphoric – swatches of fabric that might provide a colour theme or a feeling, “I want my garden to feel luxurious like a piece of silk”.  A mood board doesn’t need to mean anything to anyone except for you, however if you want to use it to communicate your ideas to others you might want to think about what your using and how they portray your message.

If you are engaging a landscape architect or professional designer to help you with achieving your dream garden, a mood board can be the perfect way for you to let them know what you want.  Designers are generally very visual people, and a bunch of images and ideas in a format they understand will get their creative juices jumping.

Here’s how you mood board.  It’s easy really, and will take you back to your pre-school days.  You will need a pile of magazines, photos, or other stuff that you like, a pair of scissors, and some glue and paper or a pinboard and pins.  Find a comfy spot, preferably on the floor so you can spread yourself out and start searching for inspiration. This is where the scissors and glue come in.  Start to cut and paste to your hearts content.  It doesn’t matter what the finished product looks like as long as it means something to you.  Don’t think you need to finish your mood board here and now, the best ones are those that evolve over time.  When you collect things as you go, on your day to day travels, you can watch your dreams build and grow.

My Bizness Babes course included some mood boarding for our businesses.  It was great fun sitting on the floor with 14 other mums surrounded by paper, scissors and glue.  We chatted, searched and laughed and all felt like big kids back in pre-school.  Here’s my Bizness Babes mood board,  and some images waiting to find a mood board home.

If you prefer to collect your ideas online and electronically there are a couple of websites that are set up for online mood boarding.  My favourite is Pinterest, and I’ve found some truly beautiful images and words of inspiration there.

So, are you in the mood yet??

So what are you up to this chilly weekend?

13 May

The forecast for Sydney is sunny but cold, again, as if we hadn’t frozen enough this week.  I’ll be drawn outdoors, rugged up and ready to soak in some bone thawing autumn sun to continue my search for inspiration and ideas for both my garden design and my slowly germinating business idea.  I’ll also be supporting some of my other Bizness Babes who are reaching some exciting milestones with their fledgling businesses.

There are so many things to do in Sydney to get your creative juices flowing.  Here are the top 5 on my to do list for this weekend, simple though they may be, I’m hoping to have 5 big ticks by the time I sit down with a nice glass of wine on Sunday evening.  Maybe I’ll see you somewhere…

1. Check out a farmers market – I’ll be heading over to the farmers market at Riverside Girls at Gladesville to stock up on gorgeous seasonal produce, and to support the Karma Soap Company.  Felicity will be selling her fantastic fresh goats milk soaps – the Drama Queen has a cupcake one and loves it!

2. Go for a bush walk – Our new place backs onto the Field of Mars Bushland Reserve, and I’ve been promising to take the Drama Queen for a bush walk since we moved in, so this might be the weekend.  Hopefully her cold clears up enough to make it happen.

3. Do some blog research – I’ve been trawling the blogosphere to try and find other good gardening or landscape blogs, but keep getting sidetracked, there are so many great ones out there. One that always has me giggling is Toldyah.  This is another Bizness Babe who has a huge idea, and I’m sure, knowing Tania there is nothing that will stop her.  Shhhh… can’t tell you too much more – but it’s very exciting!

4. Get out to the Million Paws Walk on Sunday – OK, I’m lacking one key ingredient for this one – the 4 pawed sidekick so this one might not get the tick, but what a great day for those of you with 4 legged friends to get out and enjoy the sunshine at Sydney Olympic Park.  Plus you can check out Best Dressed Pets.  They are a brand new business that are “Bringing back doggy style” – Go Deb!

5. Head out for a baby-cino – The Daredevil and the Drama Queen love their ‘cinos and banana bread, and one of our favourite end of weekend things to do is to head over to Balmain, check out the shops and have coffee and baby-cinos.  I love spending a bit of time book browsing, and Balmain has some fantastic independent bookshops – I think you might find me in the gardening section this week!

Got to love that baby-cino smile!

So, what are you doing this weekend??
